How Schools and Nurseries Are Using Yoga to Support Student Mental Health in 2026

It is a challenging time for children and young people in the UK. Recent data from the NHS and the Children’s Society shows that one in five children now faces a probable mental health condition.  Waiting lists for specialist support are longer than ever. In February 2026, the Royal College of Psychiatrists warned that half a million children were waiting for mental health treatment.

Because of this, teachers and nursery staff are looking for immediate and practical ways to support the children in their care. The educational sector is shifting strongly towards a Whole School Approach to mental health.  Schools and nurseries are using accessible tools like yoga and mindfulness to build resilience, improve focus, and teach emotional regulation.

Practical Wellbeing in the Classroom

Yoga and mindfulness are no longer seen as just physical activities. They are essential tools for emotional and behavioural support. In the classroom, these practices help children manage daily anxiety. They calm the nervous system and help children return to a state where they are ready to learn.

For early years settings, simple breathing exercises and movement help toddlers understand their feelings. Early Years Yoga builds a vital foundation for emotional literacy. It helps nursery staff guide children through big emotions in a safe and playful way.

In primary schools, Children’s Yoga offers a necessary brain break. It gives pupils a chance to step away from academic pressure and reconnect with their bodies. This supports better behaviour and focus during lessons.

For older students, Teen Yoga and targeted mindfulness sessions provide practical coping strategies. Teenagers face immense pressure from exams, social media, and peer relationships.  Mindfulness gives them the skills to navigate these challenges safely.

These tools are also highly effective for children with Special Educational Needs. SEN Yoga can be adapted easily to support children with autism, ADHD, trauma, or anxiety. A child-centred yoga practice provides a predictable routine that reduces sensory overload and builds confidence.

Insight from the Classroom

Sarah is a primary school teacher and wellbeing lead in a London academy trust. She has seen the impact of these tools first-hand.

"We started introducing short mindfulness and breathing practices at the start of the school day," Sarah says. "The difference in the classroom environment is huge. The children are calmer, and we spend much less time managing low-level behaviour. We also use adapted yoga movements for our pupils with ADHD. It gives them a structured and safe way to release energy and refocus before a core subject lesson."

Taking the Next Steps

Educators and nursery staff cannot replace medical professionals. However, school staff can provide daily, consistent support. By integrating yoga and mindfulness into the educational day, you can create a safer and calmer environment for every child.

If you want to bring these tools into your setting, proper training makes all the difference. Beam Academy offers recognised teacher training courses designed specifically for people working with children and young people. Our training focuses on practical outcomes, safety, and inclusive practice.

You can build your skills and confidence with our Early Years Yoga or Children’s Yoga courses. If you work with older students, our Teen Yoga and Mindfulness for children and teenagers programmes offer targeted strategies for secondary education.
