Advances in technology have been at the forefront of some of our most outstanding achievements.
None of these more so than the digital age we now live in. Tv, the internet, smart phones, online gaming and social media, all have a massive impact on our daily lives.

This can be both a positive and a negative, particularly with children. Many studies have shown that children who have access to digital devices without proper time management often end up spending many hours a day staring at screens at the expense of any physical activity. In addition this overuse often goes hand in hand with excessive snacking, addictive behaviour, and a multitude of additional unhealthy habits. These can quickly escalate and lead to damaging mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, low self esteem, anger management and in some severe cases suicide.

Physical social interaction and activity from a young age is crucial to a child’s development. With our homes and educational establishments now becoming digital hubs, particularly with the current global pandemic, we are reminded of the delicate balance between the benefits of this online world and the risks it represents.

Practicing mindfulness is an ideal tool that instills calm and balance to your everyday life and routine using its core strengths:

- curiosity that is free from judgment
- the ability to regulate or control your attention
- an orientation to your own experience that is open and accepting

Using these core strengths mindfulness develops attention, emotional cognitive understanding, body awareness and coordination as well as interpersonal relationship building skills. Our brains are designed to constantly adapt and with practice we can train our minds to change our behaviour and the way we think that has long lasting positive and beneficial effects on not just ourselves but our family, friends and those around us.
