How To Look Out For Sustainable Seafood

A dish of shellfish eaten on the coast of South Africa 165,000 years ago was the first reported seafood supper. We've eaten seafood for as long as there have been humans.

Seafood is high in lean protein, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and vitamins B and D, and it is one of the most carbon-efficient foods on the earth.  Because the ocean provides the majority of our fish, it is especially vital to buy responsibly harvested seafood to preserve healthy fish and marine populations in the future.

What factors contribute to the sustainability of seafood?

To be deemed environmentally sustainable, seafood must come from healthy fish populations, have a low impact on the marine ecosystem, and be responsibly managed (no overfishing). Sustainable fish may be harvested on an ongoing basis while yet preserving the ecosystem. After all, that's what "sustainable" means: able of being sustained.

"Sustainable seafood means it was caught in a way that ensures there are still plenty of fish in the sea now and in the future," according to the MSC.

When a fishery is certified with the MSC blue fish label, it signifies that the fishery satisfies MSC's sustainability standards, which include maintaining healthy fish populations, minimising environmental damage, and fishing in responsibly managed areas.

How can you tell if your seafood was harvested in a sustainable manner?

In a nutshell, read the labels! The MSC blue fish label is one of the simplest signs to check for, indicating that the product has been certified to the MSC Fisheries Standard. The MSC blue fish mark guarantees that the seafood is wild-caught and originates from a sustainable source.

Another way to verify the sustainability of your seafood? Investigate the manufacturer. Companies that use sustainable practises want you to know about them, so it doesn't take long to Google a seafood producers and see if it prioritises sustainability in its business strategy.
